Bearing Gifts: Unwrapping New Technology Trends

Description
This class is intended to provide a fun, fast-paced, and informative
introduction to and update on today’s hottest technology trends. Program
participants will be able to identify technology trends and they will
understand how these trends will impact or can be integrated into
traditional library services. Content will be presented in with a “can-do”
focus intended to encourage participants to investigate at least one
technology for implementation in their institution. Course structure will
include brief vignettes and demonstrations of a wide variety of
technologies. Some of the topics to be covered include instant messaging,
podcasting, open source software, spyware and other malware, developments in
mobile computing, blogs and wikis, radio-frequency identification, and more.
Participants will be able to develop an increased awareness of new and
changing technologies, understand how new and changing technology affects
traditional library services, and be able to identify ways in which one or
more of these technologies would be applicable to their institution

Concepts in Endocrinology

Description
A follow-up to previous “Concepts in Neurology,” this course is intended for
health science librarians who wish to learn more about medicine to increase
their effectiveness in providing information services to clinical staff.

Diana Norris is an acute care nurse practitioner and has 9 years experience
working as an advance practice nurse as part of a hospitalist team caring
for acutely ill adult patients with a wide variety of medical illness. Diana
is also on the clinical faculty at the UCONN School of Nursing and Yale
University School of Nursing.
Conflicts and Communication

Description
Unhealthy conflicts cost medical libraries time, money and credibility, as
well as diminish the quality of their services. Learn three models of
workplace conflict management that can be applied with library users,
co-workers, vendors and other institutional employees. Participants will
learn how to control their own emotionality,
resolve problems and increase productivity, even when dealing with chronic
difficult situations.

Pat Wagner has been working with libraries since 1978 as a consultant and
trainer and is a frequent presenter at regional and national medical and
special library conferences. She has a professional background in marketing
and has developed several marketing programs specifically for the medical
library community.
Searching
for Drug and Pharmaceutical Information Online

Description
This course offers an overview of major online sources for
pharmacology/therapeutics information and pharmaceutical market research.
Topics covered include factors in the drug development and regulatory review
process that affect information retrieval, as well as types of drug
nomenclature and their relationship to scientific communication and
effective literature searching. Discussion centered on detailed examination
and comparison of sources will emphasize key points to consider in database
selection.

Bonnie Snow, director, Pharmaceutical Markets, Dialog. Widely recognized in
the information professional community as a subject specialist and expert
searcher familiar with pharmaceutical industry information needs and
applications, Bonnie Snow has 30 years of experience as an online educator,
author, and consultant. Her bibliography includes more than 70 publications,
earning her an award for Excellence in Online Published Columns and
recognition in the books Secrets of the Super Searchers (1993) and Super
Searchers on Health & Medicine (2000). She has served as Chair of both the
Pharmaceutical Division of the Special Libraries Association and the
Pharmacy & Drug Information Section of the Medical Library Association.

Finding Information
on Environment and Health

Description
The hands-on training session will focus on how to obtain and use valuable
resources for environmental health information. It will demonstrate
resources developed by the NLM in areas of toxicology and environmental
health. A primary focus will be those available centrally through the NLM
website and related online resources. Ultimately, this effort is intended to
lead to concrete improvements in the daily lives of community residents
through the generation of new activities to promote environmental health.

Terry Greene, M.S. is a Senior Environmental Health Specialist at the JSI
Center for Environmental Health Studies (JSI). She has taught professional
institutes on environmental health for the American Public Health
Association annual conferences and has developed regional environmental
health information training programs for the Environmental Protection Agency
and National Library of Medicine. Ms Greene is co-author of the JSI tutorial
"Environment and Health: Learn About the Environment Where You Live. Protect
the Health of Your Family and Community." Written for communities, it is a
good introduction to using available information to protect local
environmental health
