Project Management

The purpose of this course is to improve students’ project management
skills or to introduce the discipline to future project management candidates

John Lombardo has 25 years of IT-related project experience as
both a participant and project leader. Projects include infrastructure
replacement projects, Y2K compliance, and implementation of new technology
for the enterprise. He holds American Management Association Project Management
certification.

Concepts in Neurology

A follow-up to last year’s “Concepts in Renal Medicine,”
this course is intended for health science librarians who wish to learn
more about medicine to increase their effectiveness in providing information

Nurse Specialist at Eastern Connecticut Health Network. She has 23 years
of nursing experience and spent 10 years on the nursing faculty at Baystate

Beyond Marketing: Consultative

be considered vital to the organization. Marketing is part of a multi-pronged
approach to insure those goals are met. In this interactive workshop,
you will learn the essential things you need to prepare and deliver a
successful marketing initiative. This workshop will cover: basics of consultative
selling strategies; case studies; creating your elevator talk; group exercises

PDAs and the Medical
Librarian - 1:00p.m. - 5:00p.m.
Through demonstration, lecture and discussion you will learn methods of
integrating the new PDA technology into your personal and professional
life as a medical librarian. You will also hear methods of starting or
expanding a PDA program in your library, including providing classes,
organizing a users’ group, and recommending resources. Both the
Palm and the Windows operating systems will be discussed and demonstrated.
Specific software and hardware useful to healthcare providers and examples
of wireless connectivity will be shown. Finally, the use of PDA technology
for library applications such as data collection of bar code reading will
be discussed. MLA CEUs: 4 credits pending

Evidence-Based Medicine
and the Medical Librarian - 1:00p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
This course will be an introduction to the basic concepts of Evidence-Based
Medicine (EBM) for health sciences librarians. Through the demonstration
of a variety of search tools, the class will focus upon finding good evidence
in the medical literature. Participants will learn to review findings,
place in perspective various search results, judge the validity of Evidence-Based
studies and discover the role that the librarian can play in providing
EBM training and support to those in their respective institutions. Additional
content will be presented to help the librarian interpret data from the
studies through a basic primer in medical statistics. This course utilizes
course material, independent readings, reviews, and exercises. An interactive
component will allow the audience to ask medical questions with live searching
and interpretation. MLA CEUs: 4 credits pending.
Instructors:
Frank Domino, MD is an Associate Professor in the Department
of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Massachusetts
Medical School, where he is the Family Medicine Clerkship Director. Dr.
Domino is an Associate Editor for Family Medicine to the UptoDate clinical
database. In addition to EBM, his interests include medical ethics and
medical informatics.
Len Levin, MS, LIS,
MA, AHIP is the Manager of Educational Programming at the University of
Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. He also served as Health Sciences
Librarian at the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston from 1996-2003.
He is currently serving as 2003-2004 chair of NAHSL.
Jim Comes, EdD is
the Associate Director for Reference, Education and Research Services
at University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. Jim came to
Worcester from Ball State University where he served as Health Science
Librarian. He has been involved with the third-year clerkship program
to introduce EBM to the medical students.

Caring for the Mind:
Providing Reference Services for Mental Health Information, 2:00p.m. -
5:00p.m. Class offered at NO CHARGE.
Responding to mental health reference questions is challenging for even
the most experienced librarian. In this course, you will learn how to
provide effective reference services for mental health information. You
will learn more about the experience of the library patron with mental
illness. You will learn the best resources, including consumer health
web sites, databases, and print resources to respond to mental health
related questions. Locating easy-to-read materials and resources in other
languages for mental health information will be covered. Handling the
reference interview with emotional patrons will be explored. “Caring
for the Mind” will teach you how to better serve patrons with mental
illness needs. Location TBA. MLA CEUs: 3 credits pending
