Licensing Electronic Resources - 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
In the good old days, all we had to master was the Copyright Law and Fair Use. We would acquire a book or a journal, post and monitor a "fair-use" photocopy policy, and go on about our activities. Now, disks arrive; we become connected with online sources. With each new digital information product, there arrives a separate license. Each contains its own private "copyright" terms imposed by contract. This course provides a primer on: license provisions and terminology; comparing the license and copyright; and managing the licensing process. Through lecture, instructor debate and student participation, you will learn strategies for developing a license management model, including: building a team for license evaluations and negotiation; a clause-by-clause analysis of an existing license agreement; tips for negotiating strategies; and techniques for building a productive relationship with the legal department.

Professional Presentations - 8:00 am to 1:00 pm
Making a "professional" presentation at a workshop, conference or board meeting, whether it is a formal or an informal one, involves considerably more than just being able to stand up and speak. And, a professional presentation has nothing to do with the presenter's degrees, title, or salary. Some people always will be better presenters than others, but an effective and truly professional presentation cannot be made unless a number of factors are taken into consideration. In short, a professional presentation is carefully planned; it doesn't just happen. You will learn:
  • The different natures of a presentation
  • How to effectively plan your presentation
  • Why the audience is your friend
  • The tips & tricks that put the 'zing' in your presentation
  • How to deal with possible presentation problems
  • Why the "medium" is not the message

Data Detective: Finding the Jewels of Public Health Datasets - 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm
What is the difference between health statistics and health data? What can I do if I only find the right statistics, but not in the right format I need and the year I prefer? Where are those freely available data-retrieval tools that I can use, and how do I use them? These are the questions this course aims to address. An overview of the definition, nature, types and sources of health data will be followed by specific instructions on how to generate and create your own health statistics by using several major health data retrieval applications like CDC WONDER, BRFSS, WISQARS, CANCER QUERY and MEPSnet.
